New Moves

Hello folks,

My name is Nacho Nova, I’m the guy that does the stuff here.

Hi.

You’re probably wondering, “what’s up with all this? Where is this place I’m at?” Right? Do people wonder like that? Anyhow, I will attempt to set the scene for what you see on your screen. Grab a sandwich & get in bed, it’s storytime.

SECRET ORIGIN

I was born March 20 in the harsh clime of the Chihuahuan Desert. Since I was a tiny child I’ve enjoyed drawing comics, which is why this site is set up as a comics site. I want to include a lot of disparate content on this site & know the comic setup isn’t the best, but my knowledge of computer things and patience for learning more computer things at this moment in my life are both lacking, so I’ll find a way to make it work & not look terrible. It may still look terrible, in which case I’ll also add glittery cat graphics.

So anyhow I drew a bunch of comics, obsessive-style, it really picked up when I was 10, I filled notebooks with quasi-supernatural superhero jokey adventures, reveling in comics’ ability to allow the maker to create little universes & make the rules, make it all happen. It was the first real thing that gave me confirmation I was capable of creating something from chaos.

SERIOUS BUSINESS

So a few years ago I ran a comic on a site I had, basically the same series as this one here but with cruder art & more naval-gazing. During this period in my life I was jazzed about comics, totally taking it seriously & throwing myself wholeheartedly into the thing. After a while I had amassed enough comics to send a portfolio off to comics syndicates, so I submitted it to one syndicate. The feeling of tossing that package in the envelope was fantastic, like I was completing a cycle. A few weeks later I got the rejection letter, which I hung up near my drafting table in some misguided mood of self-psyching-out. Fuck. A defeat.

So I lost interest in submitting to other syndicates & decided I would just keep doing the comic for the site. Realizing there was no spectre of sanitization looming over me anymore, I got a little looser with the content of the comic, drifting away from the conventional form of what I’d been doing. At times the common comic trope of setup-setup-beat-punchline made me feel super boxed in. No matter how much I riffed on the content I still had to adhere to the structure. It was as surprising as a guided tour. How surprising could a comic strip be when you’re always aware there’s a joke coming to comfort you in the last panel?

Not to take anything away from the jokes you see here. These are gems.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE

Oh yeah, during this period I started smoking pot. Whatevski. It was California, I was depressed. So that was probably why I was questioning the form of my comic so much. But I was bummed & bored. I felt disconnected from the work, it wasn’t really speaking to me. So then I started drawing a comic about my own depression. Page after page of this narrative poured out of my pen, so I figured I’d do a comic book. It sprawled into a bizarre mindfuck story, but it was true to what was going on in my life, so it made comics fun again.

But once again, I got bored with comics. What next? Music had been becoming a larger part of my life, so I turned my attention to music for a few years. Only a few months back when I reentered college & began doing political comics for the school newspaper did I realize how much I missed drawing comics. So I dusted off the old raison d’être & decided to have some more fun.

This is that fun.

ERRATA

So I still do other stuff, like music & a podcast & a painting & other things sometimes. That stuff will also be posted here. Why not? It’s all stuff that comes naturally, why goof up what’s organic?

Thank you for coming, folks. You guys are my friends.
